Se7en

Se7en

Se7en is a film about two homicide detectives' desperate hunt for a serial killer who justifies his crimes as absolution for the world's ignorance of the Seven Deadly Sins. The movie takes us from the tortured remains of one victim to the next as the sociopathic "John Doe" sermonizes to Detectives Sommerset and Mills -- one sin at a time. The sin of Gluttony comes first and the murderer's terrible capacity is graphically demonstrated in the dark and subdued tones characteristic of film noir.

Collateral

Collateral is about a cabbie Max Durocher is the type of person who can wax poetic about other people's lives, which impresses U.S. Justice Department prosecutor Annie Farrell, one of his fares, so much that she gives him her telephone number at the end of her ride. Although a dedicated man as seen through the efficiency in which he does his work, he can't or won't translate that eloquence into a better life for himself. He deludes himself into believing that his now twelve year cabbie job is temporary and that someday he will own his own limousine service. He even lies to his hospitalized mother that he already owns one, with a further lie that he tells her as such primarily to make her happy, rather than the truth which is that he won't do anything to achieve that dream. One night, Max picks up a well dressed man named Vincent, who asks Max to be his only fare for the evening. For a flat fee of $600 - double what Max asks - Vincent wants Max to drive him to five stops that evening.

Thriller Opening- Shadow of a doubt

Shadow of a Doubt
1943
Directed by the Master of suspense-Alfred Hitchcock

Hair + Make up + costume
Neat hair, immaculate, doesn't fit in the area(slums). Their suits are neat and very clean, almost perfect like.
Facial Expression + Body Language
Straight face, not really emotional. Similar body language between Uncle Charlie and Neice Charlie. you  can tell they are closely linked with each other.
Colour + Lighting
the lighting in the first part of the film we saw was kind of lost, which makes it seem mysterious. Low key lighting is used. Deception is there, and there is shading over the eyes of Uncle Charlie
Setting + Props
Posh house in the slums, rundown, burnt cars. Cigar and money in Uncle Charlie's bedroom, this shows that he wealthy, and has expensive taste in things. He is definately upper class.
Positioning of objects + People in a frame
There is distance between Uncle Charlie and the Land lady. Uncle Charlie shows lack of communication.

Shadow of A Doubt- Alfred Hitchcock

This film is used through Mise-En-Scene. Shadow of A Doubt was made in 1943 and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense.

Charlie Oakley creates quite a stir and charms the ladies club as well as the bank president where his brother-in-law works. My Favourite Thriller

My favourite thriller has to be ''MEMENTO"

Memento

Memento is a 2000 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan.
It stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man with anterograde amnesia which renders his brain unable to store new memories. During the opening credits, which portrays the end of the story, it is shown that Leonard kills Teddy (Joe Pantoliano). The film suggests that this killing is in vengeance for the rape and murder of his wife (Jorja Fox) based on information provided by Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss). Memento chronicles two separate stories of Leonard, an ex-insurance investigator who can no longer build new memories, as he attempts to find the murderer of his wife, which is the last thing he remembers. One story line moves forward in time while the other tells the story backwards revealing more each time.

Group Preliminary Exercise

Our task was to produce a primiraly exercise and post it onto youtube then onto our blogs. We worked in a group of four. Two of us appeared in the video whilst the other two produced the video. The video was very differnt to our Vox Pop video, the way we produced it was very different. Tomi and I used the camera to video Chanel and Chree. The camera was on its stand, and we use different angle shots, extreme close ups on chanel hand, a mid shot of Chanel and Chree talking, a long shot of Chanel walkin down the corridor and aso a close up of chanel talkin to Chree alone. We would zoom in or out sometimes when we were recording this video. Before we made this video we created a storyboard what we wanted in the video, in the storyboard, we drew down several types of shots that we would like, and see how many seconds each shot would last.

Our Vox Pop Analysis

One useful source of news is a vox pop. This is where journalists or special researchers go out into the street to ask members of the public for their views on matters of current public concern.
We made a vox pop video and we posted it on youtube and then posted it onto our blogs. To produse our Vox pop we chose three people out of a wide range of an audience and aske them the followin questions
  • 'What is your favourite thriller',
  • 'What do you like about the thriller genre.'
  • 'What makes a great thriller'
And as you can see in the third post below this, you can see all the answers to our questions. We worked in a group of four two of them produce it whilst the of two acted in the video. We use differnrt shots in the video, close ups, long shots etc. Our vox pop lasted about approximately 2 mintues long. We produce our Vox Pop in aplace where we knew that there would be a wide range of audience members.
The media use vox pops for many reasons, but chiefly for the following:
  • to test public opinion and reaction
  • to influence decision-makers
  • to forecast results of events
  • to stimulate public debate
  • to promote the newspaper, radio or television station, and make it more popular

Analysis of Film Openings Part 2 :~)

  • Picture of Blood
  • Picture is a sign of Remberance
  • Colour to Black and White
  • Reundeveloping Picures

Why i think Memento is a Thriller

..There is dramatic music which is escclating

..This builds up tension

..There is crime and mrder

..There is also a Red Hrring in this Film

What makes the audience want to keep watching

They may want to know...

You want to know why the man is getting shot

Why is the photo going backwards

Why has he got so many photographs

Who killed his wife

Memento is a 2000 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan, adapted from his younger brother Jonathan's short story "Memento Mori". It stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man with anterograde amnesia which renders his brain unable to store new memories.
During the opening credits, (which portrays the end of the story) it is shown that Leonard kills Teddy (Joe Pantoliano) for the rape and murder of his wife based on information provided by Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss).
This film is often used to show the distinction between plot and story. The film's events unfold in two separate, alternating narratives — one in color, and the other in black and white. The black and white sections are told in chronological order, showing Leonard conversing with an anonymous phone caller in a motel room. Leonard's investigation is depicted in color sequences that are in reverse chronological order. As each sequence begins, the audience is unaware of the preceding events, just like Leonard, thereby giving the viewer a sense of his confusion.
By the film's end when the two narratives converge we understand the investigation and the events that lead up to Teddy's death.

Why i think Children of Men is A Thriller

..Unexpected suspense

..Whilst watching the film I reacted to the explosion which made me jump

..Pause after the Explosion

..Enigma

..Murder

What makes the Audience want to keep watching the film?

You want to know what the explosion is about

Why is a woman carrying her own arm that came of in the explosion

Today we were analyzing some modern thrillers, we were investigating the rules of the genre and also looking at ideas for our own thrillers.

Children of Men is a classic example of a modern thriller.
Children of Men was made in 2006
In 2027, in a chaotic world in which humans can no longer procreate, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea, where her child's birth may help scientists save the future of humankind.

No Country For Old Men :)

I have watched and analyzed the film 'No country For Old Men'.
The opener gives you an idea of what the film will be about and who will be the main character
During the opener we see that there are many shots being used, the main shots used at the beginning are Extreme Long shots.
We then see the first two characters, the shots being used are Mid-shots which only shows half of there body. Mise-en-scene is then being used we see a character wearing all black with his hair puilled back and a big black coat this shows darkness and evil.
We then see a police wearing bright colours which shows innocence. Tension builds when a character strangles another character to death.
He then takes a breath of relief this shows us that he needed to do that to feel better. He then kills another characer this shows us that the character likes killing people since he knows that he's goin to hell.

Thriller.. What Does THRILLER actually mean?...

Thriller....

Depicting crime, mystery, or espionage in an atmosphere of excitement and suspense

This is a suspenseful and sensational story or film

Usually consisted of numerous action scenes and fast paced plots

The brightest examples of thrillers are the Hitchcock’s movies.
Thrillers are mostly characterised by an atmosphere of menaceviolencecrime and murder by showing society as dark, corrupt and dangerous, though they often feature a happy ending in which the villains are killed or arrested.
Thrillers heavily promote on literary devices such as plot twistsred herrings and cliffhangers
They also promote on moods, such as a high level of anticipationadrenaline rusharousal, ultra-heightened expectationuncertaintyanxiety and sometimes even terror
The tones in thrillers are usually gritty, slick and lurid.

No country for old men - Motel Shootout

Aspects of the Thriller: Hitchcock

A Maguffin is a plot device that motivates the characters and advances the story,
but has little other relevance to the story.

A MacGuffin (sometimes McGuffin or maguffin)

catches the viewers' attention or drives the plot of a work of fiction.

The MacGuffin is common in films, especially thrillers.

Commonly, though not always, the MacGuffin is the central focus of the film in

the first act, and then declines in importance as the struggles and motivations of characters play out.

It may come back into play at the climax of the story, but sometimes the

MacGuffin is actually forgotten by the end of the film.

Hitchcock was also fund of an

'ENIGMAS'

An Engima refers to a puzzle, something mysterious or inexplicable.
Or a riddle or a difficult problem.

In thrillers, this is commonly something which the protagonist has to try and find out or solve before the narrative is resolved and the film finishes.

Red Herrings

A Red Herring is the name given to a device which intends to divert the audience from the truth or an

item of significance.

This can also with other devices such as (engimas) to create suspense.
